Human trafficking activities and the confrontation of humanitarian values in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia

Abstract

In general, this research aims to examine structural vulnerabilities, recruitment practices, documented cases, and gaps in victim protection through a qualitative review of legislation, official statistics, institutional reports, and international evidence. More specifically, the research focuses on the prevalence of human trafficking cases that disregard fundamental human values. The data sources for this study consist of primary data—obtained directly from the field through in-depth interviews—and secondary data, sourced from institutions relevant to the primary focus of the research. The study period spans from April to June 2026. The data analysis techniques employed in this research include data reduction, data presentation, and the drawing of conclusions and verification. Human trafficking undermines fundamental human values by reducing people to economic instruments, normalizing coercion, and weakening social responsibility. The results of this study indicate an increase in human trafficking activities in NTT that disregard human values. Consequently, the researcher recommends a framework for collaborative action, community risk mapping, education on safe migration, easily accessible referral mechanisms, survivor-centered recovery, and periodic evaluation.  It is concluded that coordinated, rights-based interventions—spanning from the village to the provincial level—represent a concrete measure to break the chain of human trafficking in East Nusa Tenggara and can help reduce the occurrence of similar cases in the province.
